Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Mauricius Tiberius Perpetuus Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Maurice Tibère perpétuel auguste.

Cet exemplaire semble surfrappé sur un follis plus ancien. Son identification est rendue difficile par l’état de conservation.

MAURICIUS TIBERIUS
(08/13/582-11/22/602)
Maurice succeeded his father-in-law Tiberius II. After great victories over the Sassanids, he suffered many setbacks in the Balkans and could not prevent the installation of the Slavs and Avars. A military plot overthrew him in 602. He was assassinated while trying to take refuge with Chosroes II.
