Historical background

MACEDONIA - MENDE

(5th-4th century BC)

Mendé, founded by settlers from Eretria in Euboea, was located southwest of Cape Poseidon, on the peninsula of Pellene in Chalkidiki between Potidae and Skione. The region was famous for its wine which is sometimes mentioned by ancient authors. Mendé was part of the Attico-Delian league and as such paid a tribute of between 6 and 15 talents. The city was finally taken by Philip II of Macedon in 357 BC..
