Historical background

MACEDONIA - MACEDONIAN PROVINCE - THESSALONIKI

(168-49 BC)

After the capture of Perseus at Pydna in 168 BC by Paul-Émile, Greece was separated into four republics. Thessaloniki, the ancient Therma, the current Salonika, received its name in honor of Cassander's wife in 315 BC. The city was the capital of the second republic. After Andriscus' revolt, Macedonia was heavily taxed and treated as a conquered province. Under the Empire, it became a senatorial province.
