Historical background

MACEDONIA - MACEDONIAN PROVINCE - PELLA

(2nd - 1st century BC)

Pella became capital of Macedonia under Archelaus, succeeding Aigai. After the capture of Perseus at Pydna in 168 BC by Paul-Emile, Greece was separated into four republics. Pella was the seat of the third republic. After Andriscus' revolt, Macedonia was heavily taxed and treated as a conquered province. Under the Empire, it became a senatorial province.
