Commentary

This type with the reversed B seems much rarer than the general works would suggest. Only the third group contains this variety. The coinage of Aesillas seems much more complex than the vision we had of it in the recent past

Historical background

MACEDONIA - MACEDONIAN PROVINCE - THESSALONIKI

(168-49 BC)

After the capture of Perseus at Pydna in 168 BC by Paul-Émile, Greece was separated into four republics. Thessaloniki received its name in honor of Cassandra's wife in 315 BC. The city was the capital of the second republic. After Andriscus' revolt, Macedonia was heavily taxed and treated as a conquered province. Under the Empire, it became a senatorial province.
