Historical background

MACEDONIA - PROVINCE OF MACEDONIA - PELLA

(Second - first century BC)

Pella became the capital of Macedonia under Archelaus, succeeding Aigai. After the capture of Perseus at Pydna in 168 BC by Paul-Emile, Greece was divided into four republics. Pella was the seat of the Third Republic. After the revolt of Andriscus, Macedonia was heavily taxed and treated as a conquered province. Under the Empire, it became a senatorial province.
