Historical background

LYDIA - THYATIRA

(2nd century BC)

Thyatira was a very ancient city of Lydia located on the high Lycos east of Apollonis. It was colonized by the Macedonians in the Hellenistic period by Antiochus I Nicator. Cistophores were minted by Aristonikos under the name of Eumenes III in 132-131 BC. The city had a very important imperial coinage between the 1st and 3rd centuries for nearly two hundred years between Claudius and Salonina.
