Exemplaire sur un flan légèrement ovale, bien centré des deux côtés avec un petit manque de métal au revers sur la queue du taureau. Très joli droit avec le cimier complet. Beau revers avec l’ethnique complet. Patine de collection ancienne avec des reflets dorés

Commentary
Poids léger. Frappé avec un coin légèrement rouillé au droit. Malgré la rareté du type, nous n’avons pas relevé d’identité de coin pertinente. Le type semble plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux. N. K Rutter, HN. op. cit., 147 note 3 est le seul à signaler que : “ The letter EY occasionally appear on coins in this group: e.g. stater (SNG Oxford 1050)”.
Lightweight. Struck with a slightly rusty die on the obverse. Despite the rarity of the type, we have not found any relevant die identities. The type appears to be rarer than general works suggest. N. K. Rutter, HN. op. cit., 147 note 3 is the only one to report that: “The letter EY occasionally appear on coins in this group: eg stater (SNG Oxford 1050)”

LUCANIA - THOURIOI
(5th - 4th century BC)
Thurium whose name would be derived from a fountain named Thuria, the new Sybaris, was founded in 443 BC on the site of the ancient Sybaris, destroyed in 510 BC by the Crotoniates. It was a Pan-Hellenic Athenian colony, initially populated by Messenians, driven out by the Spartans. Its silver coinage was very important. Around 390 BC, the Lucanians inflicted a serious defeat on the inhabitants of Thurium (Diodorus of Sicily XIV, 101) which did not affect the prosperity of the city. It fell under the thumb of the Brettiens in 268 before. It was refounded in 194 BC under the name of Copia by the Romans. At the end of the Republic, again, the name of Thurium is attested. Octave-Auguste was born there on September 23, 63 BC.
