Commentary

Variant not listed in Mr. Terisse's latest book. example with rays in the center on the reverse but without the points at the ends of the branches of the Holy Spirit cross. This treizain is actually composed of twelve deniers to be matched in the format of the denier tournois. The deniers are of the assembled bracteates type. Custom dictated that the priest would take one of the deniers from the treizain. Mr. Térisse's explanations in particular suggest that since 13 is an evil number, it was necessary to exclude one denier from the set, representing, moreover, in some way, the \\\"denier of Judas.\\\"

Historical background

LOVE AND MARRIAGE

It was customary in the past to give a treizain during the wedding mass. This treizain was blessed and signified entry into a community of property for the married couple. The treizain, which later became a medal or wedding token, was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. The reference work on the subject is the work of Jules Florange, Love and marriage in numismatics, Moulins, 1936 now replaced by that of Henri Térisse, La Numismatique du Mariage, Argenton-sur-Creuse 2008.
