Obverse legend : UNIS A JAMAIS.
Obverse description : Couple vêtu à l’antique se donnant la main, avançant vers une statue de l’Hyménée, posé sur un piédestal, qui tient un flambeau. Derrière la statue, un jeune chêne est enlacé avec un arbuste. L’épouse dépose une colombe aux pieds de la statue. Signature à gauche : PETIT INV. ET F. .

Reverse legend : HENRI / DEFONTAINE / MARTHE / DUPONT / - / 27 OCTOBRE / 1903.
Reverse description : Légende gravée en 6 lignes dans une couronne fermée de roses.
Commentary
Cette médaille est décernée aux noms des époux : Defontaine et Dupont.
Historical background
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
It was customary in the past to give a treizain during the wedding mass. This treizain was blessed and signified entry into a community of property for the married couple. The treizain, which later became a medal or wedding token, was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. The reference work on the subject is the work of Jules Florange, Love and marriage in numismatics, Moulins, 1936 now replaced by that of Henri Térisse, La Numismatique du Mariage, Argenton-sur-Creuse 2008.
