Commentary
Cette médaille aurait été utilisée et décernée à Claude-Xavier Girault (1764-1823) le 22 janvier 1789. Avocat au Parlement de Dijon, conseiller auditeur à la Cour des comptes de Dijon, passionné d’histoire et d’archéologie à partir de 1786, il concourt avec succès en 1788 au prix de l’Académie de Besançon avec le sujet « En quel temps le comté d’Auxonne et le ressort de Saint-Laurent furent-ils détachés de la province de la Franche-Comté pour être réunies partie à la cité et comté de Chalon, partie au duché de Bourgogne ? ». Il devint alors membre de l’Académie de Besançon et de celle de Dijon, célébrant son prix par remploi de la médaille d’Or du Duc d’Hostun.
Marie-Joseph d'Hostun (1683-1755) était comte de Tallard et duc d’Hostun. Pair de France, il épouse en 1713 Marie-Elisabeth-Angélique-Gabrielle de Rohan. Fils de Camille d’Hostun, maréchal de France, il eut également une brillante carrière militaire et, en 1720, succède à son père comme gouverneur de la citadelle et de la ville de Besançon. En 1752, il fonde l’Académie des Sciences, des Belles-Lettres et des Arts de Besançon, et l’installe dans sa résidence, le Palais Granvelle.

Lawyer at the Parliament of Dijon, auditor at the Court of Auditors of Dijon, passionate about history and archaeology from 1786, he successfully competed in 1788 for the prize of the Academy of Besançon with the subject \\\"At what time were the county of Auxonne and the jurisdiction of Saint-Laurent detached from the province of Franche-Comté to be reunited partly with the city and county of Chalon, partly with the duchy of Burgundy?\\\". He then became a member of the Academy of Besançon and that of Dijon, celebrating his prize by reusing the Gold Medal of the Duke of Hostun..

In 1789, events will accelerate and cause the fall of royalty. If on May 5, the King opened the meeting of the States General in front of 1,200 deputies (doubling of the third), in the face of the stagnation of the debates, the Third Estate proclaimed itself in the National Assembly with certain deputies of the two other Orders, the Nobility and the Clergy. On June 20, it is the Oath of the Jeu de Paume of Versailles. On June 23, the King wants to suspend the debates, (intervention of Mirabeau: "we are here by the will of the people, we will only get out by the force of bayonets"). The National Constituent Assembly is formed by the three Orders on July 9. The King dismisses Necker on July 11, but will recall him after the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. Bailly is the first mayor of Paris, appointed on July 15. Following the Great Fear which spreads in the countryside, on the night of August 4, it is the abolition of privileges and feudal rights. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen is voted on August 26, 1789.
