This denarius would have been struck between September 6, 984 or November 7, 984 and 1002, the date of the death of the emperor. Otho III succeeded in having his cousin elected as pope under the name of Gregory V (996-999) when he was in Italy. In 999, Gerbert d'Aurillac was elected pope, under the name of Sylvester II. When the emperor died in 1002, Henry II succeeded him (1002-1024).
