Commentary

This type of bronze is very rare. It can be confused with the epigraphic bronze SIMISSOS.PVBLICOS. GAL. which is even rarer, with only two known examples. On our bronze, the legends PVBLICOS.LIXOVIO.SIMISSOS and ARCANTODA.MAVPENNOS. are almost entirely legible.

Historical background

LEXOVII (Area of Lisieux)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Lexovians, a small Celtic people, had Noviomagus (Lisieux) as their main oppidum. Their territory was bounded by the hills of the Perche and the sea. According to Strabo, the Lexovians would have been excellent traders, exchanging tin from Brittany and lead from Cornwall for wine and oil from Italy. They are cited several times by Caesar in his Commentaries. The Lexovian contingent for the relief army sent to Alesia was included in the twenty thousand men counted for all the peoples along the ocean and "who call themselves Armoricans". However, the Lexovians do not belong to the Armorican group. Caesar (BG. III, 9, 11, 17, 29). Kruta: 351, 366.
