Historical background

JOHN-PAUL II (Karol Wojtyla)

(since 10/16/1978)

John Paul II succeeded John Paul I who reigned for only one month between August 26 and September 28, 1978. The vacant seat (sede vacante) was filled by Cardinal Camerlengo Jean Villot between September 28 and October 16. On October 16, Karol Wojtyla, a Pole, the first foreign pope since 1523, takes the name of John Paul II.
