JOHN-PAUL II (Karol Wojtyla)
(since 10/16/1978)

The vacant seat (sede vacante) was filled by Cardinal Camerlengo Jean Villot between September 28 and October 16. On October 16, Karol Wojtyla, a Pole, the first foreign pope since 1523, takes the name of John Paul II.
