Commentary

The sequin or zecchino d'or was first struck by John Dandolo in 1284 at the Zecca. The Zecca is the tower located in St. Mark's Square opposite the Doge's Palace, which can still be seen today and where the coins were minted. This type of coin is directly inspired, or even copied, from Byzantine coinage. For this reason, we consider the obverse to be Christ in Majesty.
