Commentary

Leopold II of Habsburg-Lorraine was the son of Ferdinand III. Archduke of Austria, he ruled Tuscany from 1824 to 1859. Caught between Metternich's tutelage and the Tuscans' desire to free themselves from Austrian influence as part of the Risorgimento, Leopold II was overthrown in 1849. Reinstated by a counter-revolution, he abdicated in 1859 in favor of his son Ferdinand IV.
