Leopold II de Habsbourg-Lorraine est le fils de Ferdinand III. Archiduc d'Autriche, il règne sur la Toscane de 1824 à 1859. Coincé entre la tutelle de Metternich et le souhait des toscans de se libérer de l’influence autrichienne dans le cadre du Risorgimento, Léopold II est renversé en 1849. Rétabli par une contre-révolution, il abdique en 1859 en faveur de son fils Ferdinand IV..
Leopold II of Habsburg-Lorraine was the son of Ferdinand III. Archduke of Austria, he ruled Tuscany from 1824 to 1859. Caught between Metternich's tutelage and the Tuscans' desire to free themselves from Austrian influence as part of the Risorgimento, Leopold II was overthrown in 1849. Reinstated by a counter-revolution, he abdicated in 1859 in favor of his son Ferdinand IV.

ITALY - GRAND DUCHY OF TUSCANY - LEOPOLD II

(1824-1859)

Leopold II of Tuscany (1797-1870) was the son of Ferdinand III of Tuscany (1769-1824) and Louise of the Two Sicilies (1773-1802). He is the nephew of Emperor Francis I of Habsburg. His sister, Thérèse, married Charles-Albert of Sardinia. He is an ultra-conservative. He succeeded his father in 1824. He was forced to abdicate in 1859 in favor of his son Ferdinand IV (1835-1908) who was himself overthrown the following year. Victor-Emmanuel II becomes king of unified Italy in 1861.
