Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) est un écrivain, poète et navigateur anglais. Il explore les côtes américaines de la Floride à la Caroline du Nord et prend possession au nom de la reine Élisabeth Ier d’Angleterre d’une terre qu’il baptise Virginie. Sous Jacques Ier, il tombe en disgrâce. Après une expédition en Guyane, il revient en Angleterre et est accusé de complot. Il est condamné et décapité.

He explored the American coasts from Florida to North Carolina and took possession of a land he named Virginia on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Under James I, he fell into disgrace. After an expedition to Guiana, he returned to England and was accused of conspiracy. He was condemned and beheaded.
