Le royaume de Vijayanagar a été fondé en 1336 par les deux frères Bukka et Harihara ainsi que la ville du même nom. Après la mort de Harihara I, son frère Bukkaraya a continué les conquêtes territoriales. Harihara II, dés 1377, a notamment consolidé les frontières et obtenu les ports de Goa, Chaul ou Dabhol. Sous son règne, le commerce et l'économie ont connu une importante expansion. Le royaume est situé au centre-est de l'Inde sur le golfe du Bengale (État d'Andhra Pradesh).
