Historical background

MURBACH AND LURE - ANDREW OF AUSTRIA, administrator

(1587-1600)

After the renunciation of Wolfgang Dietrich de Raitenau, the choice of the chapters of Murbach and Lure concerned two different people: Gabriel Giel de Giersberg for Murbach and the prince-abbot Marc de Rye, brother of the bishop of Besançon. The House of Austria took advantage of this situation to place André, the eldest son of Archduke Ferdinand, who was enthroned by proxy in August 1587. André, born in 1558, was made cardinal at the age of 18 . He died in Rome on November 12, 1600 on his way to the celebrations of the Holy Year and he was buried in the Church of Santa Maria dell'Anima.
