Commentary

L’histoire de notre personnage est indissociable de celle de la commune de Bures sur Yvette, son fief :
Vers la fin du XIVème siècle, la seigneurie de Bures est un grand fief comprenant le Grand-Mesnil et le Petit-Mesnil. Le Grand-Mesnil connaît d’autres propriétaires : Antoine Sanguin, cardinal de Meudon, Anne de Pisselieu, dame d’Heilly, favorite de François 1er, Pierre de Valles en 1564, maître des Comptes à Paris, et anobli par Louis XI en 1482. Pierre de Valles, son fils, fut commissaire des guerres, conseiller du Roi et prit le titre de "sieur de Grandmesnil ».Vint ensuite Antoine de Valles, receveur général des finances en 1621 et secrétaire de la reine d’Autriche en 1636 ; c’est lui qui a agrandi le domaine. En 1655, nous retrouvons Pierre de Creil, maître des Comptes, propriétaire du fief de Grandmesnil d’une superficie de 58 hectares. Le château repasse à la famille de Valles, puis aux Lhérault en 1719, lieutenant général au bailliage et capitainerie de France.

The history of our character is inseparable from that of the commune of Bures sur Yvette, its fiefdom: Towards the end of the 14th century, the lordship of Bures was a large fiefdom comprising Grand-Mesnil and Petit-Mesnil. Le Grand-Mesnil had other owners: Antoine Sanguin, Cardinal of Meudon, Anne de Pisselieu, Lady of Heilly, favorite of François 1er, Pierre de Valles in 1564, Master of Accounts in Paris, and ennobled by Louis XI in 1482. Pierre de Valles, his son, was war commissioner, advisor to the King and took the title of \\\"Sieur de Grandmesnil\\\". Then came Antoine de Valles, receiver general of finances in 1621 and secretary to the Queen of Austria in 1636; it was he who enlarged the estate. In 1655, we find Pierre de Creil, Master of Accounts, owner of the fief of Grandmesnil with an area of 58 hectares.
