Commentary
Chef Joseph (vers 1840-1904) de son vrai nom Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekht, (Tonnerre déferlant dans les Montagnes) était un chef de la tribu des Nez-Percés. Il se révolta en 1877 contre la confiscation des terres indiennes au profit des colons. A la tête de 800 hommes, femmes et enfants, il tint tête à près de 2.000 soldats, gagna 12 batailles mais fut rattrappé après une poursuite de plus de 2700 km..

He rebelled in 1877 against the confiscation of Indian lands for the benefit of settlers. Leading 800 men, women, and children, he held off nearly 2,000 soldiers, won 12 battles, but was caught after a pursuit of more than 2,700 km.
