Obverse description : Tête laurée d’Hadrien à droite (O*).

Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestate Consul tertium”, (L’empereur césar Trajan Hadrien auguste grand pontife revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne consul pour la troisième fois).

Reverse legend : [ANN DCCCLXXIIII NAT. - VRB P CIR. CON/ -|-// S.C].

Reverse description : Le Génie du Cirque à demi-nu, couché à gauche, tournant la tête à droite, tenant une roue de la main droite et une meta composée de trois obélisques de la main gauche.

Reverse translation : “Anno DXXXLXXIIII Natali Urbis pariliabus Circencibus Constitutis”, (An 874 de la naissance de Rome, les jeux du cirques furent institués).

Commentary

Poids léger. Même coin de droit que l’exemplaire reproduit dans le Cayon, Los sestercios del Imperio Romano, de Hadriano a Faustina Madre (del 117 d. C. al 161 d. C.), vol. II, p/ 31, n° 103. C’est certainement l’un des sesterces les plus rares du règne d’Hadrien. Son prix en francs or (350f. en 1882) correspond à celui d’un médaillon (multiple) en or. Outre le sesterce, un rarissime aureus est associé à l’émission du sesterce. Nous avions présenté une fois un revers de ce type, dans MONNAIES 34, n°497, avec un buste différent au droit, il avait alors réalisé 750€ en TB+ sur un ordre à 900€.

This is certainly one of the rarest sesterces from the reign of Hadrian. Its price in gold francs (350f. in 1882) corresponds to that of a (multiple) gold medallion. In addition to the sestertius, an extremely rare aureus is associated with the issue of the sestertius.
