Commentary

Le portrait de ce denier n’a plus rien à voir avec le précédent (MONNAIES XXIII, n° 511) et semble devoir être daté plus tardivement entre 206 et 207.
The portrait of this denier has nothing to do with the previous one (COINS XXIII, no. 511) and seems to be dated later between 206 and 207

Historical background

GETA

(06/198-26/02/212)

Caesar

Born on May 26, 189, Geta became Caesar in 198 and received the title of pontifex the following year. He accompanies his father and his brother to Brittany from 208 and is raised to Augustat the following year. When Septimius Severus died in York on February 4, 211, the two brothers brought their father's ashes back to Rome and became co-emperors. But they hate each other. Finally, after a year of joint rule, Caracalla kills his brother in their mother's arms. Geta is dedicated to "damnatio memoriæ" (damnation of memory). His supporters are systematically massacred.
