The Duchy of Brunswick Lüneburg Calenberg was created following the division, in 1636, of the Duchy of Brunswick New Lüneburg. In 1648, following a new division, two new duchies were created, the Duchy of Brunswick Lüneburg Celle and the Duchy of Brunswick Lüneburg Calenberg. Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick Lüneburg Calenberg succeeded Jean Frédéric in 1679.
