Commentary

This drachma, cut with shears, belongs to the flamboyant group, but the copy S. 266 comes from the Goutrens treasure. It is interesting to note that the composition of the reverse is the same, more finely, than that of the Goutrens drachmas!

Historical background

GALLIA - SOUTH WESTERN GAUL - PETROCORES / NITIOBROGES, Unspecified

(2nd century BC)

The Pétrocores whose territory extended between the Dordogne and the Vézère on the current department of the Dordogne, (the former Périgord) had Périgueux for capital. They were part of Celtic Gaul and will then be attached to Aquitaine. They appear late as the Nitiobroges at the time of the final phase of the Gallic Wars. The so-called "flamboyant style" coins circulated both among some and among others..
