Obverse description : Représentation de la France assise sur des nuages à gauche, appuyé du bras gauche sur l’écusson à trois fleurs de lis. Elle tend la main droite vers un homme vêtu en veste, représentant l’odre du Tiers-Etat, qui lui présente un grand rouleau de papier timbré d’une légende en plusieurs lignes. Devant, une table, sur laquelle on voit un coffre ouvert rempli de pièces de monnaie. Dessous, guerre armé à l’antique représentant l’ordre de la Noblesse. A droite, un évêque mitré tenant sa crosse, représentant l’ordre du Clergé, retenant le guerrier par son manteau. Pyramide avec l’effigie de Louis XVI à gauche timbré : LAMOUR DE LA PATRI.

La médaille fait allusion aux dispositions dans lesquelles était alors la majorité de la nation de souscrire à tous les sacrifices pécuniaires qui seraient jugés tuiles. Le sujet de cette pièce paraît avoir été inspiré par une affection particulière pour le Clergé.

On June 17, 1789, the "States General" set themselves up as the "National Assembly". On June 20, the deputies of the Third Estate, as well as 149 representatives of the Clergy and 2 of the nobility, meet in the Salle du Jeu de Paume, in Versailles and swear not to separate until the Constitution is written. This is the famous "Oath of the tennis court". On July 9, this assembly became the "National Constituent Assembly". This assembly, which then had 1,200 deputies, sat first at Versailles and then at the Tuileries. From September 3 to 13, it votes the Constitution, which the King accepts.
