Commentary

Historical background

FRANKISH KINGDOM - THEUDEBERT I

(534-548)

Théodebert, born around 505, is the son of Thierry I (485-534) and Suavegotta, the daughter of Sigismond, king of Burgundians. He is also the grandson of Clovis, King of the Franks (481-511). He succeeded his father as King of Reims in 534. With his uncles Childebert I (511-558) and Clotaire I (511-561), he definitively submitted the Burgundian kingdom. In 539, he had Provence and part of Septimania ceded to him by Vitigès (536-540), king of the Ostrogoths. He died in 548 and his son, Theodebald (535-555) succeeded him. On his death, the kingdom of Reims was reunited with that of Clothaire I.
