Commentary

Francis of France (1555-1584), Duke of Alençon and Anjou, was the last son of Henry II and Catherine de Medici. As leader of the Malcontents party, Francis played a particularly important political role in France in the 1570s. He caused unrest at the court of his brother Henry III and participated in the Sixth and Seventh Wars of Religion. As part of the War of Independence against Spain, he was called upon to become the new sovereign of the Netherlands. Pretender to Queen Elizabeth I of England from 1572 until her death, he never married. His death on June 10, 1584, in Château-Thierry from tuberculosis allowed Henry of Navarre (future Henry IV) to become King of France upon the death of Henry III. Historical background

François, duke of Alençon then of Anjou, Brabant and Count of Flanders

(1554-1584)

François (first named Hercule) is the fourth son of Henri II and Catherine de Médicis. Brother of Henri III, he bore the title of Duke of Alençon and became the leader of the "politicians" favorable to an alliance with the Protestants. By the "peace of Monsieur" of May 6, 1576 he received Anjou, Touraine and Berry. In 1582, his intrigues with William of Orange enabled him to be proclaimed Duke of Brabant and Count of Flanders. On his death in 1584, the Duchy of Alençon was definitively united to the Crown.
