Commentary
Rare coin with the mark of the master Cosme du Moustier (a “tuft”) struck before the appearance of the mint letter B in 1539 and early 1540. 79.5 écus were boxed for this gold écu, allowing us to say that approximately 15,900 examples were struck between March 3, 1539 and March 10, 1540 (cf. Arnaud Clairand and Jean-Yves Kind, “The masters of the Rouen Mint and their different monetary units (1418-1550)”, Numismatics in Normandy, RTSÉNA 4, Paris, 2011, pp. 81-112, and pl. 7-12)
