Lorsqu’un incident se produit lors de la frappe des pièces, celles-ci sont difformées (ce qui explique les marques sur les pièces) avant d’être détruites et envoyées à la fonte.
Certaines échappent cependant à la destruction.
Ce type de variété provient d’une erreur d’outillage lors de laquelle il a été utilisé deux coins identiques en lieu et place de deux coins différents. Ce type de variété est rarissime à l’échelle mondiale et était par exemple inconnu à l’époque du Franc.
