Obverse description : Écu couronné écartelé : au 1 contre-écartelé en a et d de Castille, en b et c de Léon ; au 2 mi-parti d'Aragon et de Sicile, enté en pointe de Grenade ; au 3 d'Autriche soutenu de Bourgogne ancien ; au 4 de Bourgogne moderne soutenu de Brabant, enté d'un lion couronné et d'une aigle, enté de Flandre et de Tyrol ; sur le tout un petit écu de Bourbon.

SPAIN - KINGDOM OF SPAIN - PHILIPPE V BOURBON

(1700-1746)

Philippe, Duke of Anjou (1683-1746) was the grand-son of Louis XIV. On the death of Charles II of Spain in 1700, he was appointed king by will. It took thirteen years to conquer his kingdom, having as a competitor Charles III of Habsburg (the future Charles VI of Austria). He is the ancestor of the Spanish Bourbons still prevail today. By becoming king of Spain and the Indies, he had renounced all claims to the throne of France.
