Commentary

In 1700, Philip, Duke of Anjou, grandson of Louis XIV, succeeded his great-uncle Charles II of Spain. The Austrian Emperor Leopold I of Habsburg opposed this and wanted to place his son Charles on the Spanish throne. The War of the Spanish Succession would rage from 1701 to 1714 between the two camps: on one side France, Castile, and some Germans, and on the other Austria, the Holy Roman Empire, Great Britain, Portugal, and Aragon. Finally, Philip V prevailed and became the first king of the House of Bourbon of Spain.
