Obverse description : Buste radié, drapé et cuirassé d’Élagabal à droite, vu de trois quarts en arrière (A2).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Pius Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Marc Aurèle Antonin pieux auguste).

Reverse legend : PONTIF MAX TR P//SC.
Reverse description : Rome nicéphore assise à gauche sur un trône sans dossier, casquée et drapée, tenant de la main droite une victoriola et de la gauche une longue haste ; sous le siège, un bouclier.
Reverse translation : “Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestate Consul” (Grand pontife revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne consul pour la première fois).
Commentary
Rubans de type 3. Poids très léger. Depuis 1995, nous n’avons proposé que trois dupondii d’Élagabal, tous provenant de ROME I (n° 123, 189 et 205).

ELAGABALUS

Proclaimed emperor on May 16, 218, Elagabalus, sole august until the end of June or the beginning of July, left Syria to join Rome. Elagabalus stops at Nicomedia. He spent the whole winter there and fell ill. It was therefore in this city that he took up his second consulship. Elagabal will not arrive in Rome until July or September 219, bringing the black stone of his cult to install him in his capital. He will never return to Syria, quickly assassinated after an unequaled reign of turpitude and disorder.
