Al-Malik az-Zâhir Rukn ad-Dîn Baybars al-Bunduqdarin was the 4th sultan of Egypt and Syria, of the Bahri Mamluk dynasty, who reigned from 1260 to 1277. Nicknamed Abu al-Futuh and Abu l-Futuhat ( "father of conquest"), he was one of the military leaders of the Mamluk armies who inflicted a defeat on Louis IX during the Seventh Crusade. During the Battle of Ain Djalout, which opposed the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt to the Ilkhanate of Persia, he inflicted a historic defeat on the forces of the Mongol Empire. Under the reign of Baybars, Makuria is conquered.
