Les trois alérions portés au revers trouvent une justification ancienne.
A la fin du Moyen-Age, on feignait de croire que les ducs de Lorraine descendaient d'un frère de Godefroy de Bouillon, Guillaume. Une légende voulait que Godefroy, après avoir conquis Jérusalem, vit trois alérions et les perça tous les trois d'un seul trait de son arc.

Legend has it that Godfrey, after conquering Jerusalem, saw three alerions and pierced all three with a single shot from his bow.
