Obverse translation : "Crispus Nobilissimus Cæsar", (Crispus très noble césar).

Reverse legend : PRINCIPIA IV-VENTVTIS/ -|-// Q(CROISSANT ÉTOILÉ)A.
Reverse description : Mars ou Crispus debout de face tourné à gauche, casqué, vêtu militairement, tenant de la main gauche une haste et appuyé de la main droite sur un bouclier.
Reverse translation : “Principia Iuventutis”, (Les principes de la jeunesse).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Ptéryges fines sous le paludamentum. Coin bouché au droit au niveau du R de Crispus. P. Ferrando a recensé 31 exemplaires dont huit en musées. Cet exemplaire est illustré dans le mémoire d’A.-M. Schmitt-Cadet.
Type 3 ribbons with pelleted ends. Fine pteryges under the paludamentum. Blocked corner on the right at the R level of Crispus. P. Ferrando identified 31 examples, eight of which are in museums. This example is illustrated in the memoir of A.-M. Schmitt-Cadet

CRISPUS

Caesar

Crispus is the son of Constantine and Minervine. Born around 300, he was named Caesar in 317 with Constantine II and Licinius II. Rightly or wrongly, he is accused by his stepmother of wanting to abuse her. Faced with these accusations, Constantine had his eldest son put to death in early 326.
