Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Obverse description : Héraklès nu debout à droite, tenant un arc de la main gauche et s'appuyant sur sa massue de la main droite ; derrière la léonté ; à ses pieds, un grain d'orge ; entouré de trois globules.

Reverse


Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Taureau passant à gauche, entravé ; le tout dans une couronne de laurier.

Commentary


Poids très léger. Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire du British Museum (BMC. 6, pl. XV, n° 2) que les exemplaires n° 17 et 18 du trésor de 1953 (IGCH. 152) (Le Rider, pl. III, n° 17 et 18) et que l’exemplaire de la collection Delepierre (SNG. Delepierre, n° 2408, pl. 65 provenant du trésor de 1953 Le Rider, pl. XXI, ° 14). Mêmes coins de revers que les exemplaires n° 15 et 16 du trésor de 1953 (Le Rider, pl. III, n° 16). Le n° 18 porte des traces de surfrappe ainsi que l’exemplaire de la collection Jean et Marie Delepierre.
Very light weight. Same dies as the British Museum copy (BMC. 6, pl. XV, no. 2) as examples nos. 17 and 18 from the 1953 hoard (IGCH. 152) (Le Rider, pl. III, nos. 17 and 18) and as the copy from the Delepierre collection (SNG. Delepierre, no. 2408, pl. 65 from the 1953 hoard Le Rider, pl. XXI, no. 14). Same reverse dies as examples nos. 15 and 16 from the 1953 hoard (Le Rider, pl. III, no. 16). No. 18 bears traces of overstrike as does the copy from the Jean and Marie Delepierre collection

CRETE - PHAISTOS

(330-322 BC)

Phaistos, located fifteen kilometers from Gortyn in the fertile Messara plain, is said to have been founded by Minos like Knossos and Gortyn. Another tradition has it that the founder of the city was Phaistos, grandson of Hercules. A sympolity existed with Gortyn.
