Exemplaire sur un flan bien centré, éclaté à 8h. Patine gris foncé. Superbe buste de Constantin. Traces de circulation plus importantes au revers mais il reste parfaitement lisible

Obverse description : Buste lauré et drapé de Constantin Ier à droite vu de trois quarts en arrière (A21).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus", (Constantin pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI/ A|S// PTR.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié à demi nu, le manteau sur l’épaule, debout à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au Compagnon le Soleil Invincible).

Commentary


C’est la première fois que nous présentons cet exemplaire à la vente. Suite à la restauration de la monnaie, nous pouvons corriger le classement de Vincent Drost, puisque nous voyons désormais clairement que le buste est seulement drapé..

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
