Exemplaire sur un petit flan ovale, bien centré des deux côtés. Très beau portrait de Constantin Ier inhabituel de haut relief. Joli revers de style fin. Belle patine vert olive foncé. Conserve une partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Buste lauré consulaire de Constantin Ier auguste à gauche, vu de trois quarts en avant, tenant le globe (H*1).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin auguste).

Reverse legend : SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI/ TF|*// PLG.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié, nu le manteau sur l’épaule, debout à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).
Commentary
Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Le buste consulaire est richement ornementé avec la toga picta et la toga palmata. Au revers les lettres dans le champ T F pourraient être les initiales de “Temporum Felicitas” pour les temps heureux. Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire du trésor de Sarzeau, n° 1344, (B. 574, pl. LIV). C’est le deuxième exemplaire publié. Prendra le numéro 574b dans le Supplément III du Bastien.

On the reverse, the letters in the TF field could be the initials of “Temporum Felicitas” for happy times. Same dies as the example from the Sarzeau treasure, no. 1344, (B. 574, pl. LIV). Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
