Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type monétaire sur un petit flan parfaitement centré. Magnifique buste de Constantin Ier. Frappe un peu molle au revers. Très belle patine gris foncé avec des reflets métalliques mordorés. Conserve l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A’b) ; diadème lauré et gemmé.

Reverse description : Deux soldats debout face à face, vêtus militairement, tenant chacun une haste renversée et un bouclier au milieu, deux étendards.
Reverse translation : “Gloria Exercitus”, (La gloire de l’armée).
Commentary
Avec l’integralité de son argenture superficielle. Poids lourd. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Ptéryges fines sous le paludamentum. Arles (Arelatum) change de nom et prend celui de Constantia en l’honneur de Constantin II, né dans la ville. Pour ce type, il existe deux variétés pour le revers avec l’étoile au-dessus des enseignes (F. 395) ou entre les deux enseignes (F. 396).

Augustus
Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
