Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A’b) ; diadème lauré et gemmé (cloisonné).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Maximus Augustus”, (Constantin le grand auguste).

Reverse legend : GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS/ (PALME)// PCONST.
Reverse description : Deux soldats debout face à face, vêtus militairement, tenant chacun une haste renversée et un bouclier au milieu, deux étendards.
Reverse translation : “Gloria Exercitus”, (La gloire de l’armée).
Commentary
Arles (Arelatum) change de nom et prend celui de Constantia en l’honneur de Constantin II, né dans la ville. Pour ce type, il existe deux variétés pour le revers la palme reposant sur le sol (AMA 517-519) ou entre les deux enseignes en haut (AMA 519-520). Pour cette variété, P. Ferrando a recensé 13 exemplaires dont six en musées.

Augustus
Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
