Apollo 8 est le premier vaisseau spatial avec équipage à quitter l'orbite terrestre basse et le premier à atteindre la Lune, à s'y mettre en orbite et à en revenir. Les trois astronautes constituant l'équipage — Frank Borman, James Lovell et William Anders — sont les premiers à se rendre à proximité de la Lune, à assister à un lever de Terre, à le photographier et à échapper à la gravité d'un corps céleste.
