Commentary

We propose a double attribution for this type of unusual divisional. The protome of Pegasus on the reverse has great similarities with the Persian obols from the workshop of Célenderis (SNG. France 2, n° 80-96) which is on the reverse. For the law, the obol is anepigraph and seems to represent a bearded god or a satrap. During the revolt of Pharnabazes, then of Datames, it is possible that a divisional coinage was struck in different cities including Tarsus, the most important, but also Célenderis which was a very important port

Historical background

CILICIA - CELENDERIS - SATRAP PHARNABAZUS or DATAMES

(379-374-362 BC)

As early as 379 BC, Pharnabazes, satrap of Bithynia, had been charged with reconquering Egypt which had revolted, under the leadership of Nectanebo I (380-363 AC.), against Persian domination. Datames, satrap of Cappadocia, was responsible for assisting him on behalf of Artaxerxes II (404-359 AC.). To prepare for this expedition, considerable quantities of metal were minted at Tarsus. First struck for Pharnabazes between 378 and 374, they were then made for Datames, who succeeded Pharnabazes in 374 BC, between 374 and 372. After the death of Pharnabazes, Datames received a very important command: practically all of Asia Minor. It was not long before he revolted against the authority of the Great King. Datames died in 362 BC..
