Historical background

CARIA - CARIAN ISLANDS - RHODES

(1st century AD)

After the Peace of Apamea in 188 BC, Rhodes regained its independence. The island experienced twenty years of prosperity until the Romans proclaimed Delos a free port in 167 BC after the defeat of Perseus, king of Macedonia. The Rhodian fleet had supported the Macedonian king. Rhodian trade declined after this date. In 88 BC after the massacre of 80,000 Romans and Italians in Asia Minor, Mithridates VI, king of Pontus besieged Rhodes, without success. Rhodes remained important during the Roman period, but never regained the role it played in the Hellenistic period.
