Ariarathes is the youngest son of Ariarathes V and Nysa. He began his reign under the regency of his mother. He married Laodike, the sister of Mithridates VI of Pontus. He had two sons, Ariarathes VI and VII and a daughter, Nysa who married Nicomedes IV, king of Bithynia. He was assassinated by Gordios at the instigation of his brother-in-law Mithridates VI of Pontus.
