Historical background

BOURGES AND THE BERRY

This province which formed the departments of Indre and Cher had for capital Bourges, Avaricum of the Romans and country of Bituriges Cubi Celtic previously. A hereditary county in the Carolingian era, Berry was sold in 1101 to Philip I. This stronghold then became the prerogative of princes of the blood on several occasions but was definitively attached to the Crown in 1601. From 1422 to 1437, Charles VII held court in Bourges, which earned him the nickname "King of Bourges". The title of Duke of Berry was still worn in the 18th century by the future Louis XVI and in the 19th century by Ferdinand, son of Charles X..
