Commentary

This bronze is rare and under-documented; two coins in the New Atlas correspond to it, one in volume II and the other in volume III (DT. 2613 and 3716), which shows our uncertainties about this bronze. The two examples proposed here are anepigraphic, like almost all known examples. The authors of the New Atlas report the coins BN. 4373-75 and 4380-81, as well as no. 425 of MONNAIES XV. Unlike the previous example, this bronze does not have the two annulets in front on the obverse. The metal defect on the cheek may be the result of a special manufacture; we have seen several bronzes from this region with this characteristic, which is otherwise rare or unknown on coins from the rest of Gaul!

Historical background

BITURIGES CUBI / WESTERN CENTER, UNSPECIFIED

(1st century BC)

It is sometimes very difficult to decide on an attribution due to the lack of information on the location of the finds. On the other hand, a site that is too well excavated can distort our judgment because the concentration of specimens found on a given site does not necessarily correspond with the ancient reality. Numismatics like other sciences abhors a vacuum and has tried to fill them by all means, even at the cost of error. The uncertain coins attributed to the Bituriges Cubes are poorly known and little or poorly published. But in the Center-West, around Poitiers, Limoges or Bourges, these coins are known to local scholars who have classified them differently for a long time. Only active collaboration can allow us to better understand these coins and return them to whom it may concern..
