Dimensions de l’étoile à 5 branches : 43 mm
Exemplaire en bronze argenté et émail avec son ruban rouge brun d’origine. Cet ordre est notamment attribué en fonction de mérites artistiques, littéraires ou scientifiques, mais aussi pour honorer les faits héroïques et les services exemplaires rendus dans l’État du Congo.
La médaille est conservée dans son écrin bordeaux timbré d’une couronne argenté avec un intérieur en feutrine écrue et soie blanche timbrée DEGREEF BRUXELLES 112 RUE DU MIDI 114.
Dimensions of the 5-pointed star: 43 mm. Specimen in silvered bronze and enamel with its original reddish-brown ribbon. This order is awarded in particular for artistic, literary, or scientific merit, but also to honor heroic acts and exemplary service rendered in the Congo Free State. (10/12/1865-17/12/1909)

Leopold II (9/04/1835-17/12/1909) is the eldest son of Leopold I and Louise d'Orléans. He married Marie-Henriette, Archduchess of Austria, who bore him three daughters: Louise, Stéphanie, and Clémentine. He relied on England to repel the aims of Napoleon III in 1866-1869. His reign was marked by the economic and industrial development of Belgium, which also became a great colonial power thanks to the personal annexation of the Congo by the king at the Congress of Berlin in 1885. Without a male heir, his nephew Albert I succeeded him. in 1909. He bequeathed the Congo to Belgium in 1908.
